14 Day Check-In

This never stops being funny to me.
This never stops being funny to me.

Today will be the 15th day of my 90 day dance challenge, but since I haven’t danced yet today, let’s just look at what I’ve been up to this past week.

The last week did not go as planned. In fact, last week I had the fun experience of seeing three different kinds of doctors. What the heck body? Anyway, don’t worry, none of it turned out to be anything bad, I am perfectly healthy. But I did get a (thankfully benign) mole removed from my leg because it was misbehaving. I only tell you this because as it turns out, having something removed from right below your knee is not awesome, and if two days later you spend the afternoon crawling around on the floor cutting out new costumes with your troupe, your leg will not be happy with you. So I had a few days where my “dancing” was practicing belly rolls because I was afraid to put extra stress on the sensitive area of my leg. Although it was not as good as actually dancing, I really had been neglecting my rolls, so it was good to spend some time focusing on them and I should really do that more often.

The good news is, my leg is healing, my mouth has adapted to braces, and I am really excited about all of my upcoming performances. I had a really good half-hour or more block of practice the other day where I kept thinking “Ok, I should stop and go do stuff with Chris now… no wait! I love this song!” I suspect there’s going to be a lot more of that in the coming days. I have especially been feeling really inspired to work more with my fan veils. For the past couple of days I’ve spent my “lunch break” watching YouTube videos of fan veil performances to see what works, what doesn’t, and what I should try to make my own. I feel really strongly about becoming incredibly competent with this prop, I love it and I think it’s very beautiful when done right.

Oh, and you know what else I’m excited about? That new costume I was crawling around on the floor with. Fire & Gold Belly Dance will be debuting the new costume and our newest choreography at Pima County Fair this weekend. You can also see it next weekend, and at our Open Stage at Sky Bar on May 1st. Oh yes, and at the Life Moves Showcase hosted by BreakOut Studios on May 3rd, but I won’t be at that one because I will be up in Tempe watching Mardi Love. But still. Plenty of opportunities to see new stuff from my lovely troupe!
