Tomorrow is Open Stage at Sky Bar and I am pretty excited for it because we’re going to have at least one new-to-our-event dancer, a duet featuring our two local male dancers, and special guest Heather Shoopman visiting us from LA! All that plus your hosts Fire & Gold Belly Dance, local tribal troupe Lykiska, and more!
I’m glad that people are still into performing at Open Stage during the summer, because there’s usually not a lot else to do in Tucson and it’s easy to get bored without a little monthly dance event to get people together. I have a feeling it helps that our venue serves ice cold drinks at reasonable prices. I for one am looking forward to enjoying a refreshing adult beverage after I perform. I know that some people believe that a belly dancer shouldn’t be seen drinking because we’re supposed to have a “nice girl” image, but I think that nice girls drink alcohol at bars, and I like to support toe venue that supports my community.
Anyway, in the spirit of developing new material, I will be bringing two new solos to the stage tomorrow, assuming that we have enough time in the set list for me to do both. I’ll be rockin’ some fan veils to an Apocalyptica song and doing some slow ‘n’ slinky movements to a song off of the brand-new album from The Nathaniel Johnstone Project (I very conveniently received the download code for it the day I wrote my blog post on finding new music). If all goes well I’ll be performing that second piece at Fusion Day on June 21st too.
