I’m generally a fan of ColourPop, and generally a fan of matte liquid lipsticks (because my hair never gets stuck in them), so I decided to order the ColourPop Ultra Matte Lip in Tulle and wear it for November’s Open Stage. Tulle is described as a “dusty mauve burgundy” which is just the sort of color I like for Fall and Winter gigs when I’m not feeling a dark berry or deep red. I think of it as a dark neutral.

When I applied this product, I wasn’t sure how much I liked it, it didn’t go on quite how I wanted it to and I thought it was a little streaky and emphasized my lip lines too much. However, a couple people told me they really liked the color on me, and I definitely appreciated that I was able to enjoy a drink during the show and my lip color stayed put — in fact, I still had a pretty good amount of color after dancing, drinking a beer, going out for dinner, having a big meal and a chai, and then going home at the end of the night.

But here’s the thing… by the end of the night my lips were also feeling super dry. And then although I slathered on some heavy-duty lip ointment, when I woke up the next day, my lips hurt from having been so dried out, and continued to hurt for the entire day no matter what lip balms and ointments I tried on them. My lips tend to be pretty dry normally so I have to be careful with matte lip products, and I think this one is just too matte and drying for me. If your lips are not super dry, you may find this to be a good formula for you, as it is a budget-friendly $6 and comes in some really cute colors and lasts well for a long night of dancing. I’ll probably still break it out on occasion when I can count on getting home and taking it off within a couple hours to save my lips, because it is a good color on me, but it’s not going to become a go-to product.
